This is my 5th year riding in the Dougherty Valley/San Ramon Rotary Foundation and raising money for Sentinels of Freedom as part of V3 Hopfest. This year I’m doing it to honor my mother, Clara Hagarty, who was a WWII veteran with overseas experience and passed away earlier this year and had always sponsored me. The Sentinels of Freedom does fantastic work with severely wounded veterans and their families and I’m honored to help them again in 2018. Both of my Grandfathers were wounded in WWI and unfortunately did not have the type of programs available to them that vets do today. My father was a WWII Naval Aviator, I served in the Marines in the early 1970’s and my son did multiple overseas deployments with the Marines from 2012 to 2017. We know the sacrifices that wounded vets make.
Here is a video link to see some of the vets you’ll be helping:
This year General Dynamics Corporation has agreed to match donations up to $50,0000. By donating now you can double your efforts. This limited time offer has provided an amazing way to double the impact you can have on a Sentinel’s journey towards self-sufficiency. Simply mention ‘GDMS Matching’ when sending in your donation. It’s that easy! Your employer may also qualify for matching funds. You can give with any major credit card and it only takes 30 seconds. I appreciate it so very much.
Thank you for joining me!
New 4th Degree Uniform
You can place your order for the new uniform, which is earmarked to replace the tuxedo in the near future. The link below will take you directly to the approved Knights Gear Website.
Earlier this month, the Knights of Columbus board of directors unanimously voted to adopt a new uniform for the Fourth Degree. The decision was made with the good of the entire Order in mind. While we understand that some members may prefer the old regalia, the supreme master and vice supreme masters urge all Fourth Degree members to put the good of the Order before any personal preference.
The board decided to make this move based on the following factors:
The following FAQ should answer many of the questions that have arisen concerning this change.
Q: Will the new uniform allow the use of ceremonial swords?
A: Yes. Ceremonial swords will continue to be part of the Fourth Degree. When swords are used, gloves should also be used. (see picture above).
Q: How will rank be distinguished?
A: Colored patches will be worn on the beret behind the Fourth Degree emblem as follows:
Those not holding office (who formerly wore red capes) will wear berets with no patch.
Q: Will there be discounts offered on the new uniform?
A: Yes. The Order will subsidize the new uniform with a 25 percent discount offered to all members who order the new uniform prior to Sept. 30, 2017.
Q: What if a member just purchased the old regalia?
A: Any member who purchased the old regalia after May 1, 2017, can submit their receipt along with their member number to firstname.lastname@example.org. Information will then be sent to that member on how to receive a $200 credit toward the new uniform.
Q: Is the Order making money on the new uniform?
A: No, the uniform is being sold at (or sometimes below) our cost.
Q: Was the new uniform field tested prior to its release?
A: Yes. The new uniform was field tested by Fourth Degree members attending the Warriors to Lourdes pilgrimage.
Q: Can the old regalia still be worn?
A: Yes, for a time. While the preference is for the new uniform wherever possible, the old regalia can still be worn until the end of fraternal year June 30, 2019. After that date, only the new uniform should be worn.
Q: Who made this decision?
A: The board of directors made this decision earlier this year after a three year period of testing and discussion. In addition, changing the uniform/regalia was previously discussed with the vice supreme masters at the Supreme Assembly.
Q: Did members have input on this?
A: For years, supreme officers and directors have received comments from members and prospective members that the old regalia was a barrier to membership overall, or to membership in the Fourth Degree.
Q: In what context should this change best be understood?
A: During the convention, the Good of the Order Committee stated: “We commend all of the faithful Sir Knights who have proudly worn the Fourth Degree regalia, bringing much respect to the Order. With the new Fourth Degree uniform, recently approved by the Board of Directors, this honor and respect associated with Sir Knights will remain, and it will open the door more widely for a new generation to join their ranks. In a spirit of unity, let us assist with a smooth transition to this new uniform and encourage it to be worn with great dignity and pride.
20th Anniversary of the monument dedicated promote life
Dear members of the Knights of Columbus,
First of all I want to thank you and congratulate you for organizing this 20th anniversary of this memorial erected in honour of life. Thank you for saying YES to life. This is a celebration of life. This is an affirmation of what we believe as disciples of Jesus: that Life is God’s Gift, to be accepted, respected, promoted and to be lived. You have been so courageous to proclaim it loudly today. And I am happy to be part of it because I too am into prolife activities and prolife orientation programs in India. Thank you for inviting me.
The two greatest promoters of life or “pro-lifers” whom I have met in my life are Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa of Calcutta. This memorial was erected 20 years ago, in 1997, the very year when Mother Teresa died. 3 years before she died, in 1994, she was in Washington DC where she delivered a speech at a National Prayer Breakfast. Her speech was a bomb against abortions in the United States! And so I believe that Mother Teresa also gave inspiration to those who built this monument.
Life if God’s gift, no one has the right to take it away. “You shall not murder” is one of the Commandments of God.
God says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” Jeremiah 1:5
Bible teaches us that every human life, born or unborn, is the image of God himself. That is why
Genesis 9:6 says “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man.”
However, abortion continues to be one of the most heart breaking tragedies of modern times. Millions of human beings are not allowed to be born and to live in this world due to the choice that someone makes. The abortion industry in developed countries such as the US and the UK, have become shameful acts of holocaust. According to a study, around 25% of all pregnancies in the United States end in abortion. The Supreme Court’s definition of a “right to abortion” was first enunciated as a “privacy right,” then as a “liberty right” under the Fourteenth Amendment. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions in 1973 gave unrestricted private license to judge who will live and who will die. It is estimated that 1.5 million abortions take place in the US every year. According to the National Right to Life statistics (2002) there have been 40 million abortions in the US since the Supreme Court legalized abortion on January 22, 1973. The number would have crossed 50 million by now.
The European scenario also is shocking… Abortion is not only the problem in the legally sanctioned countries but also in the developing world. For example, Brazil, the world’s biggest Roman Catholic country, has the highest abortion rates in the developing world. Researchers in India and Canada for the Lancet journal said that more than 10 million female births in India may have been lost to abortion and sex selection in the past 20 years (2006 data).
Abortion is a global issue today. One in three pregnancies worldwide ends in abortion every year. An estimated total of 40 million abortions are performed each year.
I would like to share with you a part of the speech Mother Teresa of Calcutta (Kolkata) made at the National Prayer Breakfast, Washington, DC, February 3, 1994 (3 years before this memorial was installed here).
“… I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself.”
“And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even His life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts.”
“By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems. “
“Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”
With great concern for the unborn Mother Teresa continued: “Many people are very, very concerned with the children of India, with the children of Africa where quite a few die of hunger, and so on. Many people are also concerned about all the violence in this great country of the United States. These concerns are very good. But often these same people are not concerned with the millions who are being killed by the deliberate decision of their own mothers. And this is what is the greatest destroyer of peace today – abortion which brings people to such blindness.”
“But what does God say to us? He says: “… I will not forget you. I have carved you in the palm of my hand.” We are carved in the palm of His hand; that unborn child has been carved in the hand of God from conception and is called by God to love and to be loved, not only now in this life, but forever. God can never forget us.”
“I will tell you something beautiful. We are fighting abortion by adoption – by care of the mother and adoption for her baby. We have saved thousands of lives. Please don’t kill the child. I want the child. Please give me the child.” The words of Mother Teresa unveil the true love of a mother. Her speech sent out a powerful message for action across the world!
This monument here and this anniversary meeting today send out a very powerful and relevant message to the world: that life is precious, and that like Mother Teresa we should all become voice of the voiceless and champions of life. I thank the Father of life for the gift of life. I thank God to bless all the Knights and their mission to promote life. Thank you very much.

Thomas A. Dooley Assembly 75 and Todos Santos Assembly 2286 jointly held their Officers Installation Ceremony and Celebration Dinner on Saturday 24th of September, 2016. Over 200 Sir Knights and their Ladies and guests were in attendance to witness their duly elected officers participate in having the official Jewels-of-Office bestowed upon them in solemn ceremony by the outgoing Worthy Master Sir Knight JC Greco, as witnessed by incoming Worthy Master Sir Knight TW Starkweather.
Cheers and applause accompanied the hard-earned and well-deserved awards given to many Sir Knights, symbolic of their hard work and dedication to the service of the Order of Knights of Columbus.
Earlier on, the Color Corps of both assemblies gathered outside Zio Fraedo’s Restaurant to engage in the certification process (please view the pictures in the PHOTO ALBUM).
The gathering of Sir Knights and guests settled down to a delicious dinner of steak and salmon with all the trimmings. Special thanks to our friends at Zio Fraedo’s Restaurant for providing the venue and their hospitality.
I have the unique privilege to welcome each and every member of Todos Santos Assembly to our new Cyber Home – yes we have our very own website, once again!
I felt strongly that a website is as vital as oxygen in this century, even more so than in the 20th Century. We now have a place to host an online bulletin; we also have a very efficient way to broadcast and disseminate information throughout our ranks quickly and efficiently. Once you are on the distribution list, you will be notified automatically every time a new post is published – everyone will be in the loop.
On behalf of all who will derive long term benefits from this website together with all it has to offer, I wish to congratulate and thank Worthy Faithful Navigator James Smithwick, Faithful Admiral and PFN David Schwartz for their able leadership and critical support, and to thank all the Sir Knights present at the Business Meeting on April 13th 2016 who showed their support and enthusiasm unanimously for the creation of our new 4th Degree website. May I commit now to performing my duties here until I am no longer able to by the will and grace of God.
Christ our guide and Shepherd,
